Module 1: Foundations of Business Valuation

Begin your journey towards BVIUK Accredited Membership through the first module of the BVIUK GRAND Accreditation Programme.

Module 1 provides the foundations of modern business valuation practice and introduces the core concepts, methodologies and professional standards required for the remainder of the Programme. It has been designed for finance professionals, business valuers and advisers seeking a structured, high-quality pathway towards professional accreditation.

1. Introduction to Business Valuation

•    Purpose, stakeholders, and applications of business valuation
•    Definitions of value (Fair Market Value, Investment Value, Intrinsic Value)
•    Overview of valuation approaches (Market, Income, Asset-Based)
•    The valuation process and engagement structure
2. Professional Standards and Ethics in Valuation
Author: Alexander Aronsohn
•    International Valuation Standards (IVS) and UK-specific regulatory considerations
•    Responsibilities of a valuation professional
•    Regulatory compliance & best practices
•    Ethics in valuation, conflict of interest considerations, and avoiding bias
•    Valuation reporting requirements and professional responsibilities
3. Cost of Capital and Discount Rates
Author: Bilal Noorgat
•    Weighted Average Cost of Capital (WACC)
•    Cost of equity models (CAPM, Build-Up Model, Fama-French)
•    Cost of debt and capital structure considerations
•    Small firm and illiquidity adjustments
•    Discount rates for private companies
4. Income Approach to Business Valuation
Author: Gary Trugman
•    Discounted Cash Flow (DCF) method
•    Forecasting cash flows & terminal value calculations
•    Capitalisation of earnings method
•    Sensitivity analysis and risk assessment
2. Learning Format
Module 1 is delivered through structured independent study and formal assessment.

The module includes:

• Self-study using the official BVIUK Module Handbook

• One live online Review Session

• One live online Examination (approximately three hours)

The Programme has been designed to enable Candidates to study alongside their professional commitments.
3. Summer Intake 2026
Registration:  1 July – 31 August 2026

Study Period: 1 September – 30 November 2026

Live Online Review Session: 3 November 2026 1pm (online, London time)

Examination: 9 December 2026 (1pm - 4pm) (online, London time)

Results:  21 December 2026 (by email)
Future Progression: Candidates who successfully complete Module 1 will be eligible to register for Module 2 during the next published registration window.

4. Module One Fees
Candidate Registration Fee (one-off for the entire programme): £200

Module 1 Fee: £750

The Module 1 Fee includes:

• 1 Module Handbook

• 1 Review Session

• First Examination attempt

No separate Examination Fee applies to the first Examination sitting.

Further fees relating to subsequent modules, Examination resits and Accredited Membership are set out in the Programme Regulations.
5. Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must satisfy one of the following requirements:

Option A

• A recognised university degree in accounting, finance, economics, law or another relevant discipline;

and

• Relevant professional experience in business valuation or a closely related advisory field.


OR

Option B

• A minimum of three years' relevant professional experience in business valuation or a closely related advisory discipline.

6. How to apply
Step 1:  Download and complete the Module 1 Application Form below

Step 2: Email the completed Application Form together with your supporting documentation to: resources@bviuk.com

Step 3: Your application will normally be reviewed within seven working days.

Step 4: If your application is successful, you will receive:

• Offer of Admission

• Module Information Sheet

• Programme Regulations

• Candidate Acceptance and Examination Registration Form

• Secure online payment link

Step 5: Once your signed documentation and payment have been received, your enrolment will be confirmed.

You will then receive:

• Welcome email

• Candidate Number

• Module Handbook

• Confirmation of your Review Session

• Confirmation of your Examination registration
